I am excited by the prospect of trading, and the community that implies. I am also excited by the idea of completing sets, and seeing just how many Ozzie Smith cards I can find. A Cardinal's fan living in Chicago. This is my path with cards.Timhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01984667433326557201noreply@blogger.comBlogger62125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8323100766938994213.post-76072827609290242282018-02-03T09:00:00.000-08:002018-02-03T09:00:14.096-08:00A Hall Of Famer and Someone Else<br />
It is rare in the box of 5000 that i run across cards of guys I recognize more than just a name. Sure there are the Andres Gallaraga's, the Ozzie Canseco's . . . yeah, that one. There just are not that many hall of famers in this box.<br />
<br />
But, But . . . I got one.<br />
<br />
But I don't really like him.<br />
<br />
But, he's one. He's a hall of famer.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHftorlUZehZOVKYyhDyKGCznkCqWA7AF4b09F8xzLLkL9Snkng6viFBbd1A8l8CUMgJdXL3duZ-Qs0hspHkxUETiderTbQMAdN5D7cdsgb4cQwDOVegUZP4hBKe2DVA_zI8dYHDjJ6SM/s1600/Jeff+Bagwell+-+1992+Score.bmp" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="747" data-original-width="1036" height="230" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHftorlUZehZOVKYyhDyKGCznkCqWA7AF4b09F8xzLLkL9Snkng6viFBbd1A8l8CUMgJdXL3duZ-Qs0hspHkxUETiderTbQMAdN5D7cdsgb4cQwDOVegUZP4hBKe2DVA_zI8dYHDjJ6SM/s320/Jeff+Bagwell+-+1992+Score.bmp" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
While Bag's has never been one of my favorite players, I was surpised to read a few interesting things about him while looking him up.<br />
<br />
I didn't realize that he was a trade from the Boston Red Sox. Nor, that he was a third baseman, up until the spring training before his rookie year. The team liked his bat so much they moved him to first (they had Caminiti locking up third), in the hope he would take to it. And boy did he ever. The first half of the season he may have committed 9 errors, but only 4 more after the all-star break.<br />
<br />
I also learned that the trade involving Bagwell still causes my sous-chef from Boston to groan in displeasure. Apparently they view that trade with disfavor. That makes me smile a bit.<br />
<br />
Now the other guy, well he's not as heralded. But to my suprise, after umpteen 1991 Score, the box only yielded two of the 1992 variety. So Pedro, you make the cut!<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglk932rvPzjXEutiXqZZHhneUdIfDO0QcVNgdr-PouiQlRwe56UR1psfQK82KtJqfPU0-IhBDRC3JoaJ4S38-N7FuAa5vR_py8APlGl2RnIRcKimbppqzFN_We6Y3dCWm9rkb32tmjxZM/s1600/Pedro+Munoz+-+1992+Score.bmp" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1045" data-original-width="733" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglk932rvPzjXEutiXqZZHhneUdIfDO0QcVNgdr-PouiQlRwe56UR1psfQK82KtJqfPU0-IhBDRC3JoaJ4S38-N7FuAa5vR_py8APlGl2RnIRcKimbppqzFN_We6Y3dCWm9rkb32tmjxZM/s320/Pedro+Munoz+-+1992+Score.bmp" width="224" /></a></div>
<br />
The most interesting thing I could find about Pedro Munoz was that in 1992 he led all American League right fielders in double play's turned at 4. He smoked those NL chumps (Larry Walker, and Andre Dawson), who only had 3.<br />
<br />
Don't take a lead on Pedro. Don't run to far from base on a sharply hit liner.<br />
<br />
Pedro'll turn you.Timhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01984667433326557201noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8323100766938994213.post-86641953224834618992018-01-31T08:30:00.000-08:002018-01-31T08:30:29.092-08:00Hidden Grace<br />
Still going through that box of 5000 cards I bought online. Fun. Weird. Filled with commons and strange runs of consecutive cards every now and then. And, being honest about it, the cataloging and filing is a process that I enjoy. Organizing the random large pile, into decade sorted piles, and then those into yearly, then set, etc. On down to many smaller piles sorted by card number. Then in the computer they go. Fun!<br />
<br />
Our hobbies binomial nomenclature . . . the old Order, Kingdom, Phylum, Class. I've always liked that.<br />
<br />
I like the Dewey Decimal as well. That's good decimal.<br />
<br />
In executing this battle against entropy and disorder you begin to see things. They come in groups.<br />
<br />
Like these guys:<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This is absolutely one of my favorite photos of the set. For all of its "junk-waxey"-ness, I do think Score used some really quality pictures occasionally. And this is one of my current faves.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Look at the smile on Kirt Manwaring's face.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Look at the first picture again. He seems to be laughing at the player, holding the ball out as if to say nanny-nanny-boo-boo. I got the ball. I got you.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Good ol' fun time Kirt. Who's he got? Who is this plodding baserunner?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Well, I looked it up.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And it's this guy. Who's card just happened to be in the small pile in front of me. And let me tell you, around these parts, he's a hero.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>

<br />
Look how young he is. What great uniforms the cubs had then. Stirrups need to make a come back.<br />
<br />
Mark Grace could not best Kirt Manwaring this day my friend.<br />
<br />
It must make the guy that has this website sad. (for the record, this website is awesome! And I stand in awe of the collection)<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.markgrace.com/maingallery.html">http://www.markgrace.com/maingallery.html</a><br />
<br />
That's a virtual Mark Grace baseball card museum people. Science.<br />
<br />
After digging around a little while online, I have discovered the time, the place and the off screen teammate that began this smiling moment.<br />
<br />
July 9th, home game Wrigley field, 1990. Sheffield ave. alive with the peanut hawkers, and ticket scalpers. All of the bars in Wrigleyville ready to serve the masses after the last out.<br />
<br />
Kevin Mitchell was ready. Kevin Mitchell gunned Mark Grace down for his second put-out of the day.<br />
<br />
Kevin Mitchell always makes Kirt smile.Timhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01984667433326557201noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8323100766938994213.post-4848829963470254882018-01-22T11:00:00.000-08:002018-01-22T11:00:23.793-08:00Hmmm . . . do I like it?<br />
<br />
I couldn't resist. I needed toilet paper from Walgreens. And let me tell you, I cannot for the life of me figure out why toilet paper is not on the Maslow's heirarchy of needs. Am I alone in launching right into DEFCON 5 if there is no more t.p. in the house and I am in desperate need? The awkward tip-toe into the kitchen for the paper towel roll is no way to live.<br />
<br />
Thank god my wife has never seen that walk of shame.<br />
<br />
And I did it. I bought a box of re-pack. It advertised one pack of unopened cards along with the 100 assorted others.<br />
<br />
Sweet!<br />
<br />
Sort of.<br />
<br />
This is what it was.<br />
<br />
<br />

I had never seen these cards before. I had never heard of the Triple Play sets that came out in the early 90's. I knew that Panini couldn't show logos. That's about it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
At first I was shocked that these were the cards I got:</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It took me a minute not to hate them outright. What the heck? Cartoons? Two of the seven cards were a sticker and a temporary tattoo! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Then, I breathed. Like they do in Yoga. I think. In and out. In and out. Slowly.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Researching the product, I'm kind of on board with it now. Clearly developed for children, and at only 0.99 a pack, very reasonable for a family to buy. What a good way to get kids into the hobby. Perhaps to get kids into baseball at all.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After I was over my initial repulsion, I looked closer. I like the symbols in the background that roughly represent the teams name. My favorite by far of these above is the Lincecum card with the Golden Gate bridge in the background. I also think the graphic of Justin Morneau is dead on and well realized. Hmm, not so bad after all.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So what did I learn?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I think the take away lesson is that the next time I run out of toilet paper when I am in need, I need to breathe like they do in Yoga. In and out. In and out, slowly.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
That and pray my wife isn't in the kitchen.</div>

That's right. It's 80's night. Put on the New Wave music, perhaps Duran Duran, maybe some Depeche Mode, or if you feel like dancing some New Order.<br />
<br />
That's my choice - New Order for the win.<br />
<br />
Couple of cards from that sweet decade, where we saw the junk wax era begin, and the definition of what was an acceptable haircut stretch (here's looking at you Flock of Seagulls)<br />
<br />

Howell was outed as a cheater by Tucker Ashford (an ex-mets manager) who saw it in his living room, on his couch, watching the playoffs. Tucker called his contacts in the Mets organization, who then relayed the information to the umps.Sure enough, Howell had pine tar on his glove . . . a definite no no. Howell was suspended 3 days for the incident.<br />

Like Yu Darvish in the 2017 World Series, this guy seems to be tipping his pitches. Known for his split finger change, Mike had quite a long and successful career. Probably could have had more success if he had learned not to show the batters his grip.<br />

God Bless the '80s.<br />

was the only year Steve was called up to the show. He was trying like heck
during spring training though. As this story in the Sonoran Union Democrat, on
March 27th 1990 recounts it. Steve Howard was put in as a pinch
hitter in the bottom of the ninth inning, down one run with two outs and bases
loaded, and played the hero! Hitting a two run single up the middle for the
game winning runs. Steve says, “I was just sitting there with Tony (manager
Tony La Russa) told me on the spur of the moment that I was hitting”. He goes
on, “I know what the situation is with the team. My chances of making it are
slim and none. I just try and go out there and have fun . . . I want to make
myself look good. Anything can happen and I want my work habits to look good.”<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<br />
As I continue to look at these players from my sophomore year of high school I recall those days with nostalgia, and wistfulness. Both of those vices reside in the realm of age, never visiting the young man. But boy, our first player is one of the big ones from my youth. He wasn't really on my radar until he played for the dreaded Yanks.<br />

It wasn't for a couple of more years and alot more Big Mac's that Wells really reached his dominance. For some reason his perfect game stands out in my head as significant. Perhaps I had just started watching Sports Center seriously, not sure. Did love watching his dominance of the era, and this is my first card of his. Somewhere in this box of 5000 I bet there's more ;)</div>

Woo Hoo another great player! All I remember about Palms here was his amazing mustache at different points along his career. It wasn't until I was looking at the back of this card that I remembered he started life as a Cubbie. This year he led the league in doubles, and the year before that he led the league in hits. This year on 7/2/91 He belted his second homer in one game for the second time that week!</div>

Another sweet catcher in action pose card from Topps. I am a fan. Charlie here played for eight teams, won the World Series in 1995, and caught for 11 Cy Young Pitchers. He invented the newfangled hockey masks that catchers wear because he got tired of gettin' dinged by foul tips. On a personal note, his son players for the Wichita State Shockers, a very good team located near my grandparents in Hutchinson, Ks.</div>

Just sitting here typing in the cold of Chicago waiting for my wife to get off work so we can meet at the local watering hole. As I wait I shall educate myself on some of these players.<br />

This is the year that Aguilera's career really hit overdrive. It was in 1991 that he got his first invite to the all-star game on the back of 42 saves that season. He would go on to the next two all-star games as well. Having taken a few years to adjust to the role of a closer, he found career resurgence this year and continued to dominate the league with his veteran arm coming out of the bullpen.<br />

Woohoo a Cardinal. This journeyman player was making a two year stop playing for the redbirds. In Rex's 14 year career he played every position but pitcher and catcher. He even went on to play in Japan for two years and won their series one of them. He is now a color commentator for the Royals. That would be a sweet job.<br />

Tom replaced the previously posted Buck Rogers as captain of the cellar dog Expos. He only lasted a year after some questionable moves were made by him, and an eerie episode where he came to spring training in marine fatigues, reportedly channeling Norman Schwarzkopf. He is currently a bench coach for the Rockies.<br />

At 6'8" and 275 pounds Jeff was one of the top high-school prospects of all time to come out of Massachusetts. He never quite found his groove in the Big Leagues. However, on August 25, 1995 he holds the record as being the only pitcher to be the third pitcher to hit a grand slam in a season. Lot of heavy swingin' pitchers that season!</div>

Look at the form of that wacky knuckle-baller. Considered a strikeout artist during his career, he now announces for the Arizona Diamondbacks. In what is a testament to the ergonomics of the knuckle ball he led the league in 1986 with 17 complete games. 17! Perhaps the coolest think about Tom is that he is in the International Bowlers Hall of Fame, unfortunately the only Hall he will find himself in.</div>

Craig here is from Munich, and if I know anything, I know that that is one sweet Pilsner sippin' mustache. A solid 11 years left him with the record for most games by a Padre at 86. He is also currently the last pitcher to hit a walk-off home run. On April 25, 1986 in the bottom of the 12th inning this lanky pitcher swung the big lumber. I tell you, this post has pitchers that can hit!</div>

This is the last year for the veteran catcher. In what was a rather lackluster 18 year big league care he still managed to win the big one with the Royals in 1985. Now he is a bench coach for the Chicago Cubs and promises to help pull that team out of the doldrums. I like this action photo Topps has chosen for his card this year. Catcher's always seem to have the best photos in my opinion.<br />

#14 Wes Chamberlain, not alot to say about him. I grew up around the corner from one of his teammates, Phil Bradley. For some reason he had a home in Columbia, Mo. None the less Wes had six mediocre seasons in the Big Leagues.<br />
<br />

#15 El Presidente. 23 big league seasons, won 100 games in both leagues, first Nicaraguan player in the big leagues. Awesome. The year this photo was snapped he pitched the 13th perfect game in baseball history. He also lead the league this year in CG and SHO, 9 and five respectively. 5 shutouts, solid.<br />

#16 Jeff Montgomery. I grew up in central Missouri loving this guy. He was the Royals go to closer for a large part of my youth. He distinguished himself by having four go to pitches, double what most relievers have. He is now broadcasting for the Royals on the station he sits as Vice-President. This guy is a mid-western ball player through and through. I am glad there are still gigs inside the game for guys like this.Timhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01984667433326557201noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8323100766938994213.post-58959739367442252402013-02-18T15:55:00.000-08:002013-02-18T18:53:38.551-08:00The Sorting of 5000I am back!!! I'm not going to buy any new cards . . . alright maybe a few, but no seriously. I'm going to catalog this giant, semi-cool ebay purchase. I got 5000 cards. That's alot to sort, and file in my OCD way. That is actually part of this hobby I like, the sorting and organizing. I imagine Dewey, of Dewey Decimal fame, enjoyed the hobby of sport card collecting as well.<br />
<br />
So I'm gonna sort, catalogue and record. Here goes, with the first of a ton of posts regarding 1992 Topps. I was in 10th grade, loved soccer, Primus, and driving.<br />
<br />
The first is #5 Dave Winfield:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjn9wZfD3USTsItiOCmyTFvbbB7J3YrGPxOaaxwbJUyhJRuYwtokpS-Uo_9qbBpx3ndcLA6rd5AhUYoqa3mxpF3DnLKig4WLaXwrMiUG7OUP-C-CO-ilxJUSRHg5wntCqA7ByOAYefVj84/s1600/scan0057.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjn9wZfD3USTsItiOCmyTFvbbB7J3YrGPxOaaxwbJUyhJRuYwtokpS-Uo_9qbBpx3ndcLA6rd5AhUYoqa3mxpF3DnLKig4WLaXwrMiUG7OUP-C-CO-ilxJUSRHg5wntCqA7ByOAYefVj84/s320/scan0057.jpg" width="235" /></a></div>
<br />
Nearing the end of a Hall of Fame career, Winfield had a descent year, becoming the oldest person in history to hit for the cycle on June 24th against the Royals. Breaking Honus Wagners record. When you're breaking a Honus Wagner record that is saying something! The very next year Dave hits a double to win the world series for his new team the Blue Jays. Well done sir, well done.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0MqjK8ZTpgU9CklrvGnMU_Rxx5MucsKYXYs1NBXqp_NLhXFrccsQ2THb0vmPEDYXkuh49qwujvqy-tAvB4e5JMYIva71BSUeN_qRHy0BFmEMONt8OZITzOWC1IugC9EtfOG-SujF1mGE/s1600/scan0058.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0MqjK8ZTpgU9CklrvGnMU_Rxx5MucsKYXYs1NBXqp_NLhXFrccsQ2THb0vmPEDYXkuh49qwujvqy-tAvB4e5JMYIva71BSUeN_qRHy0BFmEMONt8OZITzOWC1IugC9EtfOG-SujF1mGE/s320/scan0058.jpg" width="233" /></a></div>
<br />
#7 Jim Olander fought for a spot 12 years in the minor leagues. In this card from 1991 Jim finally played 12 games in the big league. With 12 games, 9 at bats, and 2 Runs he had a good showing. A broken leg the next year spelled doom for the old goat, and he never played another major league game. He is a scout now for the Detroit Tigers, and considered a quality baseball guy.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjn5JA_N8SrEQxoHBzAuaI0DAfloTYvfIpsw64nFW_ASvRCDmKZ96iDvqjNANaDcKpMJZMmSval3UnEo_rKCk6ShVVFgfzCQuymdWY15IsphuuA4tXvEpU6pZEoh_WbUyuFI-mchVuS96M/s1600/scan0059.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjn5JA_N8SrEQxoHBzAuaI0DAfloTYvfIpsw64nFW_ASvRCDmKZ96iDvqjNANaDcKpMJZMmSval3UnEo_rKCk6ShVVFgfzCQuymdWY15IsphuuA4tXvEpU6pZEoh_WbUyuFI-mchVuS96M/s320/scan0059.jpg" width="237" /></a></div>
<br />
#8 Bryan Hickerson pitched from '91-'95 in the Major leagues to an even record of 21-21. He recorded 279 strikeouts and traveled from the Giants to the Cubs to the Rockies. He stays involved with baseball via UPI, a christian outreach group using baseball to reach youth.<br />

How confusing must it have been at the Smalley house when "Roy" was called, and three generations of Smalley men turn around. By god, it's like shouting "Mom" at the grocery store.<br />
<br />
Was the Smalley family of so little imagination that they had to use the same name time and time again.<br />
<br />
Here and now I vow to never sire a Tim Graham Jr. Although, a wicked side of me could see skipping the Jr. and going straight to the third for my son. In some kind of manufactured nobility play, I would propel my son up the WASP ranks.<br />
<br />
We'll see what the wife thinks of my plan. Could have some issues with it.<br />

<br />
III here had quite a year during this cards release. The Twins win the Series, his second trip back to Minnesota finally yielded a ring in his second to last year in the Bigs.<br />
<br />
III was an All-Star shortstop in 1979, having lit up the first half of the season with a .341 batting average.<br />
<br />
Jr., III's father, was a shortstop in the Bigs as well.<br />
<br />
Well you know how the saying goes:<br />
<br />
Like Jr. like III.Timhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01984667433326557201noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8323100766938994213.post-14785170657963927552012-06-03T11:00:00.000-07:002012-06-03T11:00:50.091-07:00Where's The Wood?Putting away some of my 2012 Topps base cards I came across another card that made me beg the question: "Where's the wood?"<br />
<br />
The card below is from 1987 Topps, a 25th anniversary reprise of the 1962 design. There was some speculation before this years Topps base design was spoiled, where it was thought that this year may have wood borders as well. Alas, nothing for the 50th anniversary.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbtfiEYtZSGXdrRqgws9wD19soGokLEqgcvzIfpJxv24aP_6yv8lr6LLvI_BeP2grd5-prulLQ9z3rDah1LzuteuHQQukJXo-01tfs_jhb0U9dFbLI4oE4MWpye9B8EszwpiaVu-ftv-Y/s1600/scan0047.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbtfiEYtZSGXdrRqgws9wD19soGokLEqgcvzIfpJxv24aP_6yv8lr6LLvI_BeP2grd5-prulLQ9z3rDah1LzuteuHQQukJXo-01tfs_jhb0U9dFbLI4oE4MWpye9B8EszwpiaVu-ftv-Y/s320/scan0047.jpg" width="231" /></a></div>
<br />
This card is from one of the sets released during my first brief stint collecting baseball cards as a kid. Not only is it a sharp design (perhaps my favorite use of a team logo), it carries so much nostalgia I can't help but like it.<br />
<br />
Dickie Ray Noles may best be known for brushing George Brett off of the plate in Game 4 of the 1980 World Series. This moment is identified as the turning point for the Phillies who had struggled against the Royals up 'til then.<br />
<br />
The year this card was issued Dickie gained the dubious distinction of being traded for himself. He was dealt from the Cubs to the Detroit Tigers for a player to be named later. After four games as a Tiger, when the teams were unable to agree on the "player to be named later" Dickie was sent back to the cubs on October 24th, 1987. I'd call that an even trade!!!<br />
<br />
Having returned to baseball cards only recently, I don't have that large of a collection of cards older than 2 years. I have bought some 30 dollar random boxes on ebay, and enjoy being exposed to different sets through that. I'm pretty sure that's where Dickie came from.<br />
<br />
Here's where the design came from, the 25th anniversary homage:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNDjV12wKYRlhzr_pKKjlMtHlpio5N6EuQPvB6gLL-9ETOOty6sgMCyBK4EZIsB8CUWhZZ6vzklkn1VYs_06mF032f0JW4WNE8fbRjI4QmMMDvzakvykKtRqamgKrF9laJC0Ve5oESlf4/s1600/scan0052.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNDjV12wKYRlhzr_pKKjlMtHlpio5N6EuQPvB6gLL-9ETOOty6sgMCyBK4EZIsB8CUWhZZ6vzklkn1VYs_06mF032f0JW4WNE8fbRjI4QmMMDvzakvykKtRqamgKrF9laJC0Ve5oESlf4/s320/scan0052.jpg" width="233" /></a></div>
<br />
Through the Topps online redemption last year, I managed to score two cards from the 1962 set. They are both in this glorious condition, however, I don't really care. To me they are still cool, and the oldest cards I have.<br />
<br />
Does Jim's hat look strange to you? I think it is airbrushed, as he began the 1962 season playing for the Mets then was traded to the Pirates for the last 55 games of his major league career. Who knows which teams logo was to be on that hat? An M, or a P? The world may never know.<br />
<br />
Jim's cool tale doesn't end there though. For after the 1962 season he played two years in the Japanese baseball league. That had to be crazy in the 60's?!? He is currently the Arizona Diamondbacks director of Pacific Rim operations. He probably has pretty good insight into the baseball culture in Asia, after being involved with it for 48 years. Perhaps he brought Takashi Saito, a little used reliever, to the team.<br />
<br />
There it is. I look forward to sprinkling more of the '62's into my collection, and learning about players from quite a bit before my time.Timhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01984667433326557201noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8323100766938994213.post-11882748836747796402012-06-01T13:30:00.000-07:002012-06-01T13:30:02.217-07:00Cards of Randomness #3<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This guys name was the "Cobra", given to him during his rookie year for the way his bat struck. Wish I had a nickname like that.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimOJbMC3Tn1j3dT3uuegnBlKlOIUHS9f1qJxh1TNi42l3n1Jn0eHWUbmO7rOZLhRAYSQrOtcz8rzxYhXU1ODQTGX1ChtDJK8uegbe1-NI2TRYYdkYRVqcAeW9uCoibgRdIqe1_R9IMTTY/s1600/scan0046.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimOJbMC3Tn1j3dT3uuegnBlKlOIUHS9f1qJxh1TNi42l3n1Jn0eHWUbmO7rOZLhRAYSQrOtcz8rzxYhXU1ODQTGX1ChtDJK8uegbe1-NI2TRYYdkYRVqcAeW9uCoibgRdIqe1_R9IMTTY/s320/scan0046.jpg" width="226" /></a></div>
<br />
Coolest fact about him is that he was the first ever National League DH used in a World Series in 1976. Other than that he played 18 years, starting as a member of the "Big Red Machine" with the last three being a "cup-of-coffee" with very limited playing time for the Expos. He is honored with being a member of the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame. The card is also cool because of the number at the end of the bat. His Jersey number until the last year of his career.<br />
<br />

Not too shabby. Elected to the All-Star game one time in 1976, arguably his finest year. That same year he hit a homerun in the ALCS series to send the Yankees to the Championships.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>

Never mind the blurry photo Fleer chose to use, apparently they were afraid of his 'stashe.</div>

And now, like all great 80's cards he is a hitting coach. Although, Lee has found himself back in the Big's.</div>

As I catalog the random piles of cards that I get, I will do a little research into them, and share the anecdotes of players that may have been forgotten.<br />
<br />
Two cards from 1982 Donruss:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjH9TLqF-WjqvgAu2P3sLBsHYEjvBjWaPDMT9JYvJZpNn8P74fKRI8oj-AEc95Px9pWGmxqoEIGTQJZ9E67G7jOEdlE9qvvBVnwDnt2t_tO7qQgZVU22hEc6NgIq48g9WDkGWS_PTj80Xk/s1600/scan0043.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjH9TLqF-WjqvgAu2P3sLBsHYEjvBjWaPDMT9JYvJZpNn8P74fKRI8oj-AEc95Px9pWGmxqoEIGTQJZ9E67G7jOEdlE9qvvBVnwDnt2t_tO7qQgZVU22hEc6NgIq48g9WDkGWS_PTj80Xk/s320/scan0043.jpg" width="229" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
<br /></div>
My bad . . . I didn't know who Bobby Murcer was. What a career, not only was his bat amazing, near the end of his career he became a valuable PH, but his defense was stellar as well. In 1974 he led all major league outfielders with 21 runner's thrown out. He then went on to become, for almost two decades, a broadcaster for the Yankee's. Too further the cool factor, and I will definitely be on the look out for more cards of Mr. Murcer, he recorded two country-western tunes ("Skoal Dippin' Man" and "Bad Whiskey").<br />
<br />
Now I think that is a good start to the "Cards of Randomness". Let's see what the next holds.<br />
<br />
Lee Andrew May<br />

Lee did not have nearly the career that Bobby did above. However, he was pretty bad-ass in his own right. He was a very consistent slugger, averaging 95 RBI's from 1967-1977. He settled into a DH role at the end of his career with first the Oriole's and then Royal's. His son is the hitting coach for the Indian's AAA affiliate.<br />
<br />
Bobby wins.<br />

It isn't a contest. Let the randomness ensue.Timhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01984667433326557201noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8323100766938994213.post-2638184385968393332012-04-22T12:17:00.000-07:002012-04-22T12:19:24.754-07:00A Patch from Potch: The Cardinal Side of ThingsI finally did it . . . a real trade. Look out world, Chef's slingin' cards.<br />
<br />
Work has been busy with the changing of the seasons. Spring has come, ramps are on the pork belly, and asparagus is juicy as an apple. I am going to commit myself to blogging more, as baseball season too has begun. I will probably only buy two types of sets this year, Allen and Ginter and the Topps Flagship. So, if anyone has Cardinals or Royals from the other sets released this year, check out my "have's" page and let's see if we can help each other out.<br />
<br />
Anyways, on to the cards from Potch. I sent him a bunch of 2012 Topps inserts that he needed, and in return he sent a slew of sweet Cardinal's and Royals. I am going to split the trade in two posts, one for the Redbirds and the other the Royals.<br />
<br />
Let the parade of World Champions begin:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUt1oAMNeqYwfpX7JoiYrz0IQzxI6gBAkQ7QbLs6IrpJOh89gbrFGzR4u78LeC1B3neP6-pJuAOZ_Eaj6AdmANRloOBHSp58go0HYY6jdUmXDTgNEj0GZkcYQcs1KSI0lpgDzcZGRRDao/s1600/scan0038.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUt1oAMNeqYwfpX7JoiYrz0IQzxI6gBAkQ7QbLs6IrpJOh89gbrFGzR4u78LeC1B3neP6-pJuAOZ_Eaj6AdmANRloOBHSp58go0HYY6jdUmXDTgNEj0GZkcYQcs1KSI0lpgDzcZGRRDao/s320/scan0038.jpg" width="230" /></a></div>
<br />
Okay, while Todd was technically not a World Champion, he did pitch in game seven of the World Series in 1987. Let that fact not distract you from the man's superlative mustache. Look at it and feast. Todd had a great start to his career for the Cardinal's, garnering Rookie of the Year and Rolaids Relief Man awards in 1986. If he hadn't had two back-to-back injuries I think he could have been one of the best of his era.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
There he is. The long-necked fleet-footed center-fielder World Champion. This card is seven years after his amazing rookie and champion year. Game 3 of the Series, Willie smacks two homer's and makes a spectacular catch in the outfield. Man, it seems like the Cardinal's always have great speed in the outfield, and just consistently great management. Willie was a part of the "Whiteyball" era, good times to grow up in Missouri!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEif0kRXGSlgBF0li2yyHFHR6mw3aRsLgFSnVgNbQAuEj2FBDrz5EjrYP6F6X_e-iOvpJwewkz28svR8LyKy-YU2mxdKM7FTUMrwLODsF36LCu3eCDG7lvY9Oh_JX_EpsmTrQxfHDE6G128/s1600/scan0040.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEif0kRXGSlgBF0li2yyHFHR6mw3aRsLgFSnVgNbQAuEj2FBDrz5EjrYP6F6X_e-iOvpJwewkz28svR8LyKy-YU2mxdKM7FTUMrwLODsF36LCu3eCDG7lvY9Oh_JX_EpsmTrQxfHDE6G128/s320/scan0040.jpg" width="230" /></a></div>
<br />
A great reprint from last year's 60 Years of Topps inserts. The back of the card says that for the first time in 15 years Topps left the player positions off the cards. Ozzie certainly didn't need the reminder, as he was the gold standard of shortstops at the time. He was an All Star this year, 2nd in MVP voting, a Gold Glover and a Silver Slugger. Right in the middle of 12 consecutive All Star seasons, just an unreal player. Long live the Wiz!<br />

<br />
That's right . . . two Chris's for the price of one. I really like the Masterpieces card, this is my first of that insert set. I hope his nerve irritation heals well, and Chris is able to pitch at the level he did last year. The battle between him and Halladay was epic. Carpenter's humble attitude and huge arm have endeared him to the St. Louis population, and all wait with baited breath for his return.<br />
<br />
That's it for the Cardinals. Potch sent me a bunch more, perhaps they will find their way sprinkled into posts in the future.<br />
<br />
Look for the Royals post tomorrow.<br />
<br />
And once again, thanks Potch!!!<br />

While I choose not to include them as my favorite, since they are just sooo special, they deserve the respect their design deserves.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQOiQa6uO0vJfBfmLV0LRExg9XrT-cxQo7en6H_9IyJjOMjxB0sJMOr6TRIqS7vGSjfacB9FaOjHmAKYtUNaOhloIq-6FIMLlFlfWj8WZjfB-mnddjqXz79Wge1hvIbtGkh1_ackaZngE/s1600/scan0037.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="226" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQOiQa6uO0vJfBfmLV0LRExg9XrT-cxQo7en6H_9IyJjOMjxB0sJMOr6TRIqS7vGSjfacB9FaOjHmAKYtUNaOhloIq-6FIMLlFlfWj8WZjfB-mnddjqXz79Wge1hvIbtGkh1_ackaZngE/s320/scan0037.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<br />
I actually like this fake relic, a manufactured facade of some fantasy ring that just doesn't exist. It's okay. I live in a fantasy world allot (I happen to play allot of Magic the Gathering). The ring has a weight to it, an import denoted by density. The ring is placed nicely in the right 2/3 of the card. Well positioned, and its ratio to the over all card is correct to my eyes.<br />
<br />
The photo on the left is, for every card, a nice capture of the featured player. I especially like the Reggie in his lemon yellow uniform.<br />
<br />
I am attempting to collect all of these, and have one or two doubles. If you happen to need one, look at my list and let me know. If you happen to have one of the few I still need . . . help a brother out!Timhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01984667433326557201noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8323100766938994213.post-40413047756471652092012-03-21T21:26:00.000-07:002012-03-21T21:26:22.052-07:002012 Topps Series 1 Insert Review: Gold FuturesThis is my favorite so far reviewed, and 2nd favorite overall. Just a super clean card. The black border lends the card a classy feel next to the gold detailing. I wish the logos weren't so large, and in some strange flag form. But its my only real knock on the insert series.<br />
<br />

The featured players are a great mix. The guy above is going to have a huge year after he gets rid of this shoulder thing that is having him split time between DH and 1B. <br />
<br />
Many of the young players are going to be exciting to watch this year. Starlin Castro is one of my favorites in this series as well. .I plan on catching many Wrigley games this year. You'll most often find me 1st base side.<br />
<br />
I got a whole set extra. Just let me know what you need to complete your set.Timhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01984667433326557201noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8323100766938994213.post-47275115372905926902012-03-15T21:38:00.000-07:002012-03-15T21:38:03.176-07:00My First Real TradeI am very excited.<br />

I have finally gotten the chance to complete a real trade. One where I actually sent a card, through the mail, to a mate that sent me one.<br />
<br />
This is the card I sent:<br />

Adam from<a href="http://thoughtsandsox.blogspot.com/"> thoughtsandsox.blogspot.com,</a> must have read one of my "Plasticine" posts, and said he needed it for his collection. And, who am I to keep this knuckler from a friend. Into the mail you go sir, a fine career you had indeed.<br />

Speaking strictly to the design, once again the weird brown-orangey border looks horrible. The large seal in the lower right reminds me of something from the federal reserve. Now, I realize this is the "gold" themed set, I just don't know why Topps chose to evoke this notion with stodgy design.<br />
<br />
The plus is the sweet photos of Nolan Ryan, Cal Ripken, Albert Pujols, and so many more. I will never have baseball cards by most of these people, and it is cool to get great looking photos of them in my collection. The "technicolor" effect on a few of them is over-done, but over-all it was fun to look at. <br />
<br />

The best part is the blurred out section in the bottom right showing the team celebrations. When my favorite thing about a card is the most blurred out, tough to make out section, this is not good. Ugly card with a boring theme.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEil615XbBX4Td8u9aSvYPhJuX1x_s0VgASACy88eDNa8OE8xEkpPTzGJw6Dza3_x5f3nK5s2LbBxAcEMCevMNw_04eeInmb-p9t-HDSVPw854h9gz69JrScSdEzk_5qKLKhGXE2_HR-y_U/s1600/scan0032.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="227" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEil615XbBX4Td8u9aSvYPhJuX1x_s0VgASACy88eDNa8OE8xEkpPTzGJw6Dza3_x5f3nK5s2LbBxAcEMCevMNw_04eeInmb-p9t-HDSVPw854h9gz69JrScSdEzk_5qKLKhGXE2_HR-y_U/s320/scan0032.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />

I think the use of the picture on the right still works, but the design elements on the left look weak. The golden home-plate is kind of lame with the team logo in the center. It looks low class. <br />
<br />
The overall orange tone of the front fails to work with many of the cards (although GM-1 here is kind of sharp with Seaver in the Met's colors). The over faded base of the cards is strange, and unnecessary.<br />

I am not sure what that really means, but to me for this project I will not seek out all parallels. Just base cards and all inserts. As I now have a Haves and Wants list up on the side, as you are able, check it out and help me complete the set. (As I bought a case, I will have a lot of doubles to help you complete yours as well).<br />
<br />
To keep things interesting around here, as I complete the various insert sets I will review them briefly.<br />
<br />
First up are the Gold Standard inserts.<br />
<br />
While not all that visually stunning on their own, I thought enmasse they formed a handsome page:<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiw3N2BDMHm7VcABuWlm5zmRvQskYf8mu_K33EMjlL1KvWUUbLo0JLjM3rpr6mIaTr3FGXJ_y2fAlcivvsJkbdXleTKn-zpamTMcQKQSMyoNYz0aQrP8QtTfmQk2cMqArWoOYFS65bPRik/s1600/scan0030.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiw3N2BDMHm7VcABuWlm5zmRvQskYf8mu_K33EMjlL1KvWUUbLo0JLjM3rpr6mIaTr3FGXJ_y2fAlcivvsJkbdXleTKn-zpamTMcQKQSMyoNYz0aQrP8QtTfmQk2cMqArWoOYFS65bPRik/s320/scan0030.jpg" width="231" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">It looks "federal" to me. I know others have bemoaned all of the unused design space on the left of the card, but I think it lends a degree of "staid"-ness and appropriate level of dignity to these accomplishments. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I like the photo on the side. Does anyone know if those are actual photo's of the moment described on the card?</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The gold standard makes it feel a bit like a treasury bond or currency plate. I think this fits with the theme as well.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Overall I say B+. I smart, handsome looking insert set, and I hope to see an Ozzie make an appearance in the later Topps series (he isn't in the set at all yet :( ).</div>Timhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01984667433326557201noreply@blogger.com0
